The Daughters of the American Revolution believes that the education of our youth on American citizenship is of supreme importance for national defense. Nineteen National Defense Awards were recently presented to students in Jackson, Calhoun, Liberty, Washington, and Holmes Counties by Chipola Chapter, NSDAR.
The Bronze ROTC Medal was awarded to Cadet/Captain Amber Odom of Chipley High School, Cadet/Captain Ashley Ross of Holmes County High School, Cadet Rachel Shepard of Liberty County High School, and Cadet Amanda Madore of Vernon High School. The recipients of the award were chosen for "qualities of dependability and good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership ability, and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of ROTC training." The DAR has awarded ROTC medals since 1967 since ROTC is an important source of trained officers for our armed forces.
Each year the Chipola Chapter DAR National Defense Committee presents the Good Citizenship Award to students "who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism." The following fifth graders received the medal for 2008: Breanna Walker, Altha School; Heather Yoder, Blountstown Elementary School; James Patrick Sewell, Carr School; Sue Ellen Mosier, Cottondale Elementary; Brooke Canada, Dayspring Christian Academy; Christina Ramirez, Graceville Elementary; Caroline Pass, Grand Ridge Elementary; Jodeci Peterson, Malone School; Caroline Adams, Riverside Elementary; Violet Marie Collier, Sneads Elementary; and Austin Schmidt, Victory Christian Academy. Amanda Carnley, a fifth grader from the Chipola Home Educators, was selected to receive the award. The Good Citizenship Medal was given to Blue Springs Society officers, B.T. Johnson, Danielle Melvin, and Adrian Schell for their service and leadership in C.A.R. The Children of the American Revolution is the oldest patriotic organization for young people in the nation.
