Georgia Man Is Pulled Through Woodruff Dam

Search continues for missing duck hunter on Lake Seminole

The search is continuing for John Mark Slappey, 34, an Albany, Ga. man who was swept through a lock at the Jim Woodruff Dam on Sunday. He disappeared in the rain-soaked and swollen Apalachicola River below the Dam.

Investigators with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) say Slappey was duck hunting in Lake Seminole from a float tube when he was overwhelmed by the current and began to drift toward the dam. His half-brother Andrew Dismuke, 25, also of Albany, dropped off Slappey in the float tube about 800 yards north of the dam just before 12:40 p.m. EST. Dismuke headed up the lake in his boat to scare up ducks and run them by Slappey.

“Workers at the dam saw Slappey headed toward the dam’s open locks and knew he was in trouble,” said FWC Lt. Scott Pearce. “They threw him a life ring and tried to pull him to safety but he apparently lost his grasp in the strong current.”

A number of agencies, search-and-rescue personnel and volunteers were at the scene on Monday. They included the FWC, Chattahoochee Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Wewahitchka Search and Rescue and Bay County Search and Rescue. Their search has yielded no results.

56 New BCF Graduates Exit to Change the World

Internships are over. Portfolios are finished. Finals are graded. A collective sigh of relief from students at The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) in Graceville has swept the campus. However, for fifty-six BCF seniors, the end of the fall 2009 semester brought more than just Christmas break: it brought an inspiring commencement exercise and a charge for the future.

The new graduates were joined by family and friends on a chilly Friday morning, December 11, to share in the commencement ceremony. For many, it was an honor bestowed for years of hard work, sacrifice, and late night study. For all of the graduates, it was confirmation of God’s call on their lives and a new chapter. Among the graduates were a husband and wife, Josh and Ashley Gussler, and a brother and sister, JoLynne and Jason Fross, completing their degrees at the same time. Graduate Whitney Gillis will go down in history as BCF’s first recipient of the new Bachelor of Arts in History and Social Studies. Cheers and applause resonated through the Assembly Center as one by one, the graduates entered the building each with their own story of how God brought them to that place.

The President, Dr. Tom Kinchen, assisted by BCF Senior Vice President R.C. Hammack, conferred the degrees representing a milestone for the journey into the future. As each graduate crossed the stage to receive their degree, the faculty, staff, and everyone in attendance could only imagine what future of service that God has planned for them. The college hymn, “Tell Me the Story of Jesus” continued to resonance as graduates departed to spread the gospel and change the world for Christ.

2009 “Christmas in Jackson County” Ornaments Have Finally Arrived

Century 21 Sunny South Properties is once again offering the “Christmas in Jackson County” gold etched ornaments to raise funds for the Easter Seals Society. For 13 years Easter Seals Society has benefited from the sale of subjects depicting historically significant buildings and attractions in Jackson County. “Even though production costs have gone up, we are keeping the price at 10 dollars each and have a good inventory of previous subjects,” states Nan Harkleroad, Chairman of the Easter Seals committee. “You can place an order for an ornament by calling 526-2891 and leave your name on our list for contact, or stop by the office at 4630 Hwy 90 East.

The Chamber of Commerce kindly helps to sell the ornaments year round as well.” The subject for the 2009 ornament is the historical James MacKinnon Home on Lafayette. This Georgian Federal style home was constructed in the 1850’s by James Baker for his bride, Bessie Ferrell Baker. Located across the street from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, this home was spared in the Civil War while the Church was burned by the Union soldiers.

The home had various owners until Judge James MacKinnon and his wife, Frances deRoulhac Merritt, purchased the home (1901-1902). The MacKinnon family and descendants have lived in the home since that time. Floye Brewton purchased the property from the estate in 2007 and beautifully restored the house to its historical original grandeur. This restored home is another grand display of Jackson County history. We can all be proud to have it in our community.

This home is an excellent choice for this year’s historical ornament. You will want to add it to your collection.
